Amla and Shatavari: Harmonising Drink for Women

The combination of two highly significant Ayurvedic plants, Amla and Shatavari, forms a valuable blend for preparing a drink designed primarily to support women’s health, hormonal balance, and the overall vitality and rejuvenation of the female body.

This Ayurvedic drink is made from 70% finely ground powder of the heavenly Amla fruit and 30% Shatavari root powder, offering a holistic approach to health and general well-being, particularly for women. Prepare a harmonising drink to support hormonal balance using these two unique Ayurvedic plants:

  • Amla (Emblica officinalis), also known as Indian gooseberry, is one of the most valuable fruits in Ayurvedic medicine. It is notable for its exceptionally high vitamin C content and powerful antioxidants. In traditional Ayurvedic thought, it is regarded as “rasayana” – a rejuvenating agent that promotes vitality and longevity. Due to its unique combination of five tastes, Amalaki is used in the Ayurvedic tradition to harmonise the three vital bio-energies, or doshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha.
  • The Ayurvedic herb Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) is an adaptogenic plant whose root has been used in Ayurveda for millennia. The name ‘Shatavari’ can be loosely translated as ‘she who has a hundred husbands’, referring to its traditional use in supporting overall female vitality and fertility. This climbing plant, native to the tropical regions of India and the Himalayas, is, like Amla, classified among the so-called rasayanas – adaptogenic herbs that boost vitality, rejuvenate the body and promote long-term balance. Its roots are exceptionally rich in steroidal saponins (shatavarins), flavonoids, polysaccharides and phytoestrogens, which together form the basis of its powerful effects on the female body.

Key benefits of combining Amla with Shatavari

1. Hormonal balance and female reproductive health

Shatavari is primarily renowned as a tonic for the female reproductive system. Thanks to its natural phytoestrogens, it helps regulate hormonal balance throughout a woman’s life – from her first period through her fertile years and right up to menopause. It alleviates menstrual irregularities, relieves painful cramps and helps harmonise oestrogen and progesterone levels. It is also valued for its ability to support fertility – it nourishes and strengthens the uterus, improves the quality of cervical mucus and creates a favourable environment for fertilisation. Combined with antioxidants from Amla, this blend helps regulate the menstrual cycle and supports overall reproductive and hormonal health.

Shatavari also plays an exceptionally valuable role during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is considered one of the most effective galactagogues – substances that stimulate the production of breast milk. It increases levels of the hormone prolactin, thereby naturally supporting lactation, while at the same time providing the mother with the necessary strength and nourishment. During pregnancy, it also helps prevent nausea and generally strengthens the expectant mother’s body.

Shatavari is equally important during perimenopause, menopause and post-menopause. The phytoestrogens contained in its root naturally counteract the decline in oestrogen, thereby alleviating typical menopausal symptoms – hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings, dryness of the mucous membranes and sleep disturbances. After the menopausal transition, it helps maintain the female body’s balance and provides vitality and energy.

2. Mental well-being and stress management

Shatavari is known for its calming effects on the nervous system; it helps reduce irritability and mental tension and alleviates the effects of chronic stress. Amla, with its antioxidants, helps the body cope with oxidative stress at a cellular level. Together, they promote emotional balance, mental clarity, relaxation and overall well-being.

3. Immune system support

The high vitamin C content in Amla is important for the normal functioning of the immune system. Shatavari contains other beneficial bioactive compounds that enhance this effect. Together, they support the body’s natural defences.

4. Digestive support

Amla is rich in fibre, aids digestion and alleviates stomach acidity and constipation. Shatavari has a soothing effect on the stomach and digestive tract. This combination therefore supports healthy digestion and promotes the health of the digestive system.

5. Healthy-looking skin

The vitamin C in Amla is essential for collagen production, which keeps the skin firm and supple. Its antioxidants help revitalise and rejuvenate the body’s tissues. Shatavari helps hydrate and nourish the skin from within. This blend therefore contributes to a healthy and radiant complexion.

How to prepare and take the Amla & Shatavari drink?

This blend can be added to warm water or smoothies, making it an excellent daily dietary supplement for a healthy and modern lifestyle. Ideally, mix the finely ground Amla powder with Shatavari in warm water with honey and lemon to make a so-called churna. This is a traditional Ayurvedic method of taking herbs: the ground powder is mixed with warm water and drunk together with it. Unlike instant drinks, pure Amla drink blends contain no preservatives or additives and therefore do not dissolve in water. The most valuable component of these drinks is the ground blend of individual superfoods, which should be stirred into warm water and drunk with a teaspoon of honey. In Ayurveda, honey is used as a vehicle for the herbal properties, which are then better absorbed into the body’s tissues. The ground mixture can also be added to smoothies. Regular consumption as part of a balanced lifestyle supports vitality and the rejuvenation of the female body, better stress management, mental balance and overall well-being. As with all natural supplements, it is important to be patient and consistent in your use.
